YEARLY EVENT SHOWS FAITH IN ACTION AT CHRISTIAN BROTHERS AUTOMOTIVE FRANCHISE LOCATIONS ACROSS THE NATION
At the Christian Brothers Automotive franchise, we believe in more than making money. We believe in meaningful work.
And although helping others is something our franchisees think about every single day, we designate one day a year to give back to one group specifically — single mothers. We call it National Service Day, and it’s been going strong since 2005, providing free oil changes and other services.
This year’s event — which was Oct. 18 at Christian Brothers locations all over the country — was an inspiring group effort and a big hit for all. Our technicians volunteered their time for oil changes, our generous vendors supplied oil and filters, and other Christian Brothers employees and local church volunteers jumped in to provide car washes, refreshments, entertainment and fellowship for single moms — and even a few single dads. More than 2,000 free oil changes were performed, and more than two-thirds of Christian Brothers’ locations participated, according to company Vice President Josh Wall.
Each Christian Brothers franchise location decides how to structure its National Service Day.
The Christian Brothers Automotive West Galleria franchise in Houston, Texas, worked with three organizations that minister to single moms: Gracewood, a Christian ministry that helps single moms and their children, Second Baptist Church, which has a strong ministry for single moms, and Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church, which has a ministry for teen moms.
“To be a part of a community, you have to give back to the community,” says Kim Stehr, who owns the Christian Brothers Automotive West Galleria franchise in Houston, Texas, with her husband, Paul. “It is important for all involved — our employees, our suppliers and our community — to work together as a team to live out Galatians 5:14, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ ”
The West Galleria franchise and their vendors serviced about 30 cars at this year’s event. They also asked their technicians to pick out one car that was in desperate need of work. This year a lucky mom had her brakes replaced; last year they replaced an air conditioning system for one single parent.
Kim says their work for single moms isn’t relegated to one day a year. “We work year round offering discounted oil changes to the Gracewood moms,” Kim says.
Jonita and Adam White, owners of the Christian Brothers Automotive franchise in Frisco, Texas, joined with a neighborhood church this year to donate about 30 oil changes to single parents — mothers and a few dads who have full custody of their children.
Not only did the cars get attention, parents enjoyed free child care and lots of picnic and party food — barbecue, hot dogs and popcorn. They also received gift bags and discount coupons from the community.
“National Service Day really means a lot to us,” Jonita says. “And I know it means a lot to the parents we help. Everyone gets into the spirit of it and volunteers their time and money.
“One of the reasons we picked the Christian Brothers franchise is because of their values of taking care of the family,” Jonita adds. “God wants us to perform works of faith and not lose sight of what really matters.”
